Imagine
So, those of you who know me probably know that I had the privilege of designing clothing at English Laundry, the brand that has licensed John Lennon’s image, lyrics and likeness. Besides working with one of my best friends Tiff Wicks, this was the highlight of my time in Los Angeles. Working on garments inspired by this icon, was an honor and something I’m very proud of.
John Lennon was an important person for my Dad. My dad being an important person for me, I called him to ask about his thoughts on Lennon’s life and I thought I’d share…
On how he found out John Lennon had been killed- I was watching Monday night football and Howard Cosell, a somewhat controversial character in sports announcing was on the mic. Some people, myself included, found him to be off-putting, even annoying at times. So when he announced that John Lennon was shot, I was angry. Obviously I was devastated by the news, but also bothered to find out this way. But Howard understood the severity of the situation, he knew it made the game insignificant and he said so. In retrospect, he did a great job.
On John Lennon in life- He wasn’t always logical, but he came from the heart. His passion was the priority. He was at times, painfully honest. He had the guts to say “we are more popular than Jesus”. This wasn’t ego talking. This was something from a very well thought out person. He didn’t say better than Jesus, he said more popular and it was probably true.
He unleashed the voice for the underdog. Woody Guthrie inspired Bob Dylan and Bob Dylan inspired John Lennon. His music and his life moved this country and he moved me in a profound way. I’m so grateful for him.
When I hung up with my Dad I was a little teary eyed. I guess he moves me the way Bob Dylan and John Lennon move him.
Total Daddy’s girl, I know.
